Walking & Cycling
There
are three marked walks from
Carriganass castle. The
walks afford spectacular
views and an opportunity to
enjoy a rich variety of
flora, fauna, and bird life.
A leisurely stroll via
Kealkill Village brings you
to the well known Kealkill
Stone Circle with the bonus
of a spectacular view of
Bantry Bay.
The walks to the north of
the castle link up with the
Beara Breifne Greenway which
follows the route taken by
Donal Cam on the retreat
march to Leitrim on the 31st
of December 1602.
The
Póc an Tairbh
loopwalk takes about 3
hours. Two-thirds of the
walk are along quiet country
roads and one-third on a
hillside track.
The
Srón na Gaoithe
loopwalk takes about half an
hour longer and requires a
little more energy. Both
walks take in the
interesting Stone Row at
Toureen Lake . The ancient
craft of basketry can be
viewed on the organic farm
at Maughanasilly.
For
experienced hillwalkers,
Cnoc Baoi, the Gougane Barra
Horseshoe, and Mullaghmesha
present a rewarding
challenge
(O.S. Map: Discovery
85). A short car journey of
twenty minutes will get you
on the Sheep's Head way which
has a total of 55 miles of
marked walking track. You
can pick and choose which
section of the walk suits
you. The Beara Way which is
also easily accessible from
Kealkill is a 196 km
waymarked circuit taking in
the well known towns of
Kenmare, Glengarriff and
Castletownbere. Experienced
hill walkers will relish the
challenge of climbing the
Sugar Loaf and Hungry Hill.
Carriganass Castle is an
ideal point of departure for
cycling trips. The extensive
network of quiet country
roads offers routes to suit
both the casual cyclist and
the energetic mountain
biker. For the casual
cyclist, a trip taking in
the Borlin valley or the
Mealagh valley offers many
attractions. The more
adventurous cyclist may be
tempted to take on a 50 km
circuit route which takes in
Gougane Barra, Ballingeary
and Kilgarvan. For those on
a cycling tour the Beara
Gougane
Barra Cycling Route
passes through the Kealkill
valley.
Guided cycling and walking
tours are available. Enquire
at Carriganass Castle for
details, where the hiring of
bikes can also easily be
arranged.
